Cross Genre Experimentation

For my upcoming debut album, Atychi, for one of the songs I decided to experiment with genre mixing and it’s boundaries. The thought of combining two genres which are generally categorized into two very different genres and potentially combining them together into one song is a creators fantasy because it borders the region of creating a new genre. The genres I chose to experiment with were Rock and House, I did this by creating a lead using a synthesized guitar and layered it with a typical tropical house melody accompanied by a 4/4 kick pattern and live drum samples rather than the classic percussion and drums used in electronic music.

After creating the body of the track it still didn’t feel like there was enough in there to obviously stand out as a genre mashup. So I then decided to to cut all of the elements out except the lead guitar and transpose it up with a filtered noise rise and replacing the live drums with more typical sounds of electronic music and created a build to a complete switch of genre which would probably fit more into trap music or even a less intense dubstep style.

I feel that my approach worked, although there could be things I could change to better suit the selection of genres. For example, adding an open hat in between the kicks to make it more house-like or using other instrumentation from rock music. Regardless, this piece was a lot of fun to make and I will definitely try making cross-genre music in the future.

Atychi, my debut solo album is a cross genre experience designed to display my broad range of creative techniques and willingness to experiment in regions I am not overly familiar with
